Amazon activists are unstoppable, another world is possible

The Amazon not only encloses a vast amount of biodiversity and serves as a home for Indigenous People, it holds an infinite and unstoppable spirit. From Japan to Mexico, Brazil to Romania, during the last couple of months Greenpeace groups have taken into the street to state loud and clear to Siemens “Stop the Dam!” - “Save the Heart of the Amazon!”

While I’m writing our friends from Greenpeace Brazil are setting up pictures of the Munduruku Indigenous People and the Amazon at the doorstep of Siemens headquarters in São Paulo, calling the company not to participate in the construction of dams planned by the Brazilian government in the region.

Earlier this year Greenpeace activists pushed creative boundaries and staged an absolutely fantastic protest in front of the Siemens Germany headquarters in Munich against Siemens' plans to get involved in the new mega dam project at the Tapajos River in the Amazon.

The Munduruku inhabit rainforests in the banks of the Tapajós river where the Brazilian government intends to build a large complex of more than 40 dams that would force the Munduruku to leave their traditional home against their will, losing their livelihood.

Activists from Greenpeace Italy didn’t hold back their creativity either! Dressed in animal and trees costumes they staged an incredible protest in front of Siemens building in Milan.

Brazil has huge potential for both wind and solar energy and Siemens is an important actor and leads both sectors. Why doesn’t Siemens shift towards more ecologically and sustainable types of energy rather than mega dams that are threatening the Amazon and the Indigenous People in there?

We've heard from Brazil that the pressure is working! From ignoring that the mega dam project goes against human rights to a full range of excuses, and asking Greenpeace for ways to get into an Energy Revolution (but, let’s be real, ‘Energy Revolution’ are not the words they said), Siemens bosses agreed to a meeting with Greenpeace Brazil.

Please join the campaign to protect the heart of the Amazon by signing the petition against the dam and sending an email straight to Siemens.
